Negotiating a Pay Raise

Workbook: Ready-for-a-Raise Workbook for Dietitians is my step-by-step guide to planning and negotiating your raise request, exclusively for dietitians.

Negotiating Salary

Web Tools: Go through these two online tutorials on salary negotiation, one specific to women. They're both free. Get the links here.

Book-length Report: ADA's Compensation & Benefits Survey of the Dietetics Profession 2005 is arguably the best resource for determining your market value, a strategic element in negotiating a starting salary or raise. Get the full report from ADA to refine and negotiate your raise target figure.

Web Tool: Add to your market value research by perusing dietitians' salary listings  using RD411.com's Salary Tool. Scroll down below the submission form to view the listings. Enter your salary profile anonymously to add to the data base.

Book: Negotiating Your Salary: How to Make $1000 a Minute (2006 edition), by Jack Chapman, outlines an often-recommended technique for negotiating salary when interviewing for a new job. The advice found here is sound and the recommended tactics are worthy of your consideration.

Book: Job Search Magic, by Susan Britton Whitcomb, devotes Chapter 17 to salary negotiation and has useful scripts to adapt. This 532-page book is a comprehensive guide to getting hired with rich content on career change, communicating your career brand, crafting great resumes, techniques for acing interviews, and more.

Web Site: Salary.com is probably the best site on the Web for all things salary. Scroll down the home page to reach their Personal Tools & Resources. They include a Benefits Calculator, a Cost of Living Wizard, a solid section on salary negotiation, and more.

Negotiating Other Work Terms

Proposal Template: Approved & Paid Conference Attendance Proposal Template is a free planning tool to boost your chances of getting approval and support to attend FNCE or other conferences. You can also use it as one of your Plan B Options when you negotiate a pay raise, as described in Chapter 6 of my Ready-for-a-Raise Workbook for Dietitians.

Web Quiz: Will YOUR Manager Say Yes to a Flexible Work Request? is a quick quiz for gauging your chances of approval for job sharing, part-time, telecommuting or other work flexibility. (New window opens to my other Web site, WorkOptions.com.)

Proposal Template: Flex Success Proposal Template for getting a flexible work arrangement is a proven tool recommended by The Wall Street Journal's Work & Family columnist, among others. I wrote this for all types of professionals needing more time for their families and a life outside of work. Instantly downloadable for a modest fee from my WorkOptions.com site. (New window opens.)

Proposal Template: I wrote Max Maternity Leave for those who can't imagine having only six weeks off from work after having a baby. Virtually instant delivery for free from my WorkOptions.com site. (New window opens.)

Assessment Tool: Salvage Your Situation is a job satisfaction assessment tool. Are there some aspects of your job that are bugging you? Determine which ones are negotiable and request a change. At the very least, numbers 5, 12 and 14 are negotiable work terms. (New window opens.)

Negotiation Nuggets: A compilation of useful Negotiation Nuggets and specific applications. One of them may be just what you need for your situation.

Free Trial: Prove to your manager that you can telecommute part of the week (or month) using GoToMyPC remote access technology. Special offer from my WorkOptions.com site. (New window opens.)

Recommended Books on Negotiation

Check your library or favorite online or neighborhood bookstore for these titles, all of which I have read and recommend. Use Amazon to read summaries and reviews.

A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating: How to Convince, Collaborate & Create Your Way to Agreement, by Lee. E Miller and Jessica Miller - If you get only one book on negotiating, this is my recommendation for a solid overview of technique and practical applications. It also addresses gender differences in negotiations.

Women Don't Ask: by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever - This book examines the social forces that foster an impaired sense of entitlement among women, causing them to be a lot less likely to negotiate than men. Fascinating insights into gender-based behavior may be the springboard for making changes which produce better negotiated outcomes. Highly recommended. Available in hard cover or paperback.

Everyday Negotiation: Navigating the Hidden Agendas in Bargaining, by Deborah M. Kolb, Ph.D. and Judith Williams, Ph.D. - For those who want to dig deeper into the nuances of negotiation, this book breaks down negotiation into finer pieces of interpersonal communications.

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, by Roger Fisher, Bruce M. Patton and William L. Ury  - Considered the seminal work in negotiating.

My Favorite Money Management Web Sites

All this talk about higher salaries and pay raises at Career Coach RD is not about greed or wealth and riches. It's about being paid fairly for a job well done, earning enough to meet your needs (and some of your wants), while having enough left over to give generously.

Our society promotes overspending on stuff which is a financial trap for millions. If you're looking to escape that trap or just need some general everyday money management guidance, these Web sites offer the resources you need.

Debt-Proof Living - Mary Hunt has several cool tools and practical advice venues for getting to the liberated place of debt-free living.

Crown Financial Ministries - I've been a supporter of this ministry for around 20 years. They offer free Money Map coaching, small group studies, books, audios, financial calculators and even a career guidance section.
